A Look At Next Year

Thank you so much for the "dough" from the class! The hard part will be spending it on myself. I can't believe it is almost 2016! This year is flying by! I hope everyone enjoys the winter break with family and friends. We are headed to Ohio to see family and maybe a little snow...if we are lucky! Safe travels! See you next year! 

Math- We will continue working in Module 4 on Area and Multiplication. The students will have a quiz over lessons 5-9 on Thursday. 

Language Arts-Our story will be "Boom Town". We will not test until the following week. We will also focus on compound words and continue creating our snowmen stories. 


Science- We will wrap up our unit on Rocks and Minerals with a test on Friday. The students' Pet Rocks are due on Wednesday, January 6th. I can't wait to see their creativity!! 


Social Studies- We continue to discuss Colonial Times in SC, Chapter 4.  


Rocks
The students enjoyed making the three different types of rocks this week. Make sure you ask your child what ingredients we used for Igneous, Sedimentary and Metamorphic Rocks and why. Thanks to everyone who donated items for these activities!

The Week Before Winter Break

I can tell the students are ready for Winter Break, but it sure doesn't feel like winter! 

Math- We will continue with Module 4 on Area and Multiplication. The students will have a quiz over lessons 1-4 on Wednesday.

Language Arts-The students will have their spelling test on Thursday. (I am changing it since they have a math quiz on Wednesday). We will practice skills we have learned so far this year and will use those skills while writing a story about a snowman. 

Science- We will continue our unit on Rocks and Minerals. The students were assigned a Pet Rock Project which is due on Wednesday, January 6th.  

Social Studies- We are starting to discuss Colonial Times in SC.

Diamond Dell

The students enjoyed mining this afternoon in Diamond Dell's Gem Mining Bus! The should have brought home a bunch of rocks and minerals! Hopefully they can use the rock and mineral identification chart to tell you about the "goodies" they found!

A Look at Next Week...

Math- We will wrap up Module 3 on Multiplication and Division with a test on Tuesday. We will start Module 4 on Multiplication and Area. Math Newsletter

Language Arts- The students received spelling words this week. Their test will be Wednesday, December 16th. We will focus on writing a personal narrative and start learning how to write in cursive. 

Science- We will continue learning about Food Chains and start Rocks and Minerals. 

Social Studies- We will finish learning about Exploration in South Carolina with a test on Friday.

Farewell, Miss Schriefer

Miss Schriefer ended her time with us today. The students were sad to see her go, but they know she will be at LCEU next semester in 5th grade. Each student sent her off with the Top 5 things that they think will make her a great teacher.

The Next Two Weeks

It is hard to believe Thanksgiving is next week and December is right around the corner!!!

Miss Schriefer, USC Intern, will only be with us for two more days. Thursday, December 3rd will be here last day. She has done a great job and I know the students will miss her, but they will still get to see her at school because she will be in fifth grade next semester. 

Math- We will continue to work on Module 3, Multiplication and Division. The students will have a quiz over lessons 9,11, 15-18 on Tuesday, December 1st. 

Language Arts- The students will continue writing a story from the point of view of a turkey. Our story after break will be "Here's My Dollar". We will focus on Author's Purpose. The students will have a test over the story on Friday, December 4th. 

Science- We will focus on Life Cycles and Food Chains.

Socials Studies- We will continue learning about exploration in South Carolina. We will focus on Hernando DeSoto, Jean Ribault, Juan Pardo, William Hilton and Henry Woodward.  The students will continue to work with their groups on their Paper Slide Video. They are becoming experts on an explorer and will teach the information to the rest of the class using their video.

Fossil Frank

The students enjoyed our visitor today! He brought in a lot of fossils for the students to observe. They even went fossil digging and identified fossils they found.

Thank You Rotary Club
The third grade students each received a dictionary from the Blythewood Rotary Club on Thursday to use in class. They were super excited! 


Math- Our focus will still be on multiplication and division. 

Language Arts- We will discuss point of view (1st and 3rd person point of view). We will look at several books and passages that have different points of views.  The students will also write a story from a turkeys point of view. They will have their spelling test on Tuesday. 

Science- We will wrap up habitat changes and fossils with a test on Wednesday. Fossil Frank comes to visit on Thursday. 

Social Studies- We will start discussing early exploration in South Carolina. The students will create a paper slide show to help teach the class about the explorers we will be studying. 

The $14 for Diamond Dell and Fossil Frank is due on Tuesday. Please send the money in with your child, if you haven't done so already. Thanks!

Veteran's Day

Mr. and Mrs. Gilliam came in today to speak to the class about what they do/did in the military. They also read a book to the class. We also had several parents/grandparents come celebrate Veteran's Day at lunch with their child/grandchild. Thank you Veterans for serving our country!!

It is easiest  if you use the collection sheet with footballs that was sent home last week, however, I will take them in any format.
If you also have Labels for Education or Tyson labels, feel free to send them too and I will ensure our class gets the credit for them.

Report Cards
Your child's report card is in his/her folder. You can keep the contents inside, but please send back the envelope signed. 

Honor Roll Recognition

The students have worked very hard this nine weeks! If your child made the A or A/B Honor Roll he/she will be recognized Wednesday on the morning show.

Wish List
I am in need of index cards for the classroom. If you would like to donate a pack, I would appreciate it. They can be lined or unlined.Thanks in advance! 

Native American Fun
The class became expert potters and basket weavers this week. They also received a shell necklace. Each item represents one of the tribes we are learning about. Make sure you ask your child what item represents what tribe and why. 
Math- We will be focusing on multiplication and division again. Please encourage your child to practice his/her facts at home. They will have a math quiz on Friday.

Language Arts- Our story for next week is "Castle on Viola Street". The students will have a test on Friday. We will discuss theme in stories. I passed out spelling words on Tuesday and the students will have a test over them on November 17th. They can practice at spellingcity.com. 

Science- We continue discussing changes to habitats and how they can be harmful or/and helpful.

Social Studies- We will wrap up our unit on the Native Americans of SC with a test on Wednesday.

Metric Week Trivia

The school celebrated Metric Week last week with a short video and a trivia question on the morning show each day. I had several students who did a great job of researching the questions asked!! I was very impressed! Yesterday, Mrs. Bright announced the winners of each trivia question and the winning student received a treat. Congrats to Harrison Knight and Andrew Black for giving the correct answer to two of the questions last week!!!

A Look at Next Week...

Friday Folders
Your child is coming home with a stuffed Friday folder. Please make sure you look through it carefully for important information! 

Fossil Frank & Diamond Dell
Please look for a orange sheet of paper in your child's Friday Folder with information about two visitors that third grade will be hosting. The money for these in-school field studies is due November 17th. 

Multiplication
I started "Fast Facts" in math. The students will start with their 2's and when the pass their 2's they move to their 3's all the way to their 12's. Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their facts at home. 
Andrew, Kushi and Bennet play BOOM to practice their facts.

Math- We will be working on estimating differences and will review Module 2. The students will have a test on Thursday. 

Language Arts- We will be reading the story "My Very Own Room". They will have a test over this story on Friday. They will also be pretending to be scarecrows and writing persuasive letters to a farmer with an opening for a scarecrow. They are interesting so far! 

Science- We will start discussing changes to habitats. (ex. landslides, floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions etc.)

Social Studies-  We continue discussing Native Americans that lived in SC. (Cherokee, Catawba and Yemassee)

Science- We will wrap up water features with a test on Friday. (oceans, estuaries, lakes, ponds, rivers, streams)

Social Studies- We will start discussing Chapter 3 on Native Americans.

A Look at Next Week

Student Council
This is the first year third grade will have representatives in the school's student council. We discussed what qualities a person needs to represent our class and then everyone voted. We have a girl and boy representative and a girl and boy alternate. Congrats to Ethan and MollyJane, who will be our class representatives, and Anna and Harrison as our alternates!

Author Visit 
Kevin Kurtz came to LCEU on Tuesday. He spoke to the students about being an author and read his book, A Day in the Salt Marsh. We are learning about water features in science right now so it was perfect timing!

Your child's school pictures should be in his/her folder. Please read the directions on the back of the envelope so you know what to do if you choose to purchase or not purchase them. 

BOOSTERTHON DATE CHANGE
Due to the ongoing efforts by the LCE family to meet the immediate and significant needs of the Greater Columbia community, we have decided to reschedule our Boosterthon Fun Run fundraiser that was to take place later this month. Please mark your calendars for Jan. 13 for our kick-off pep rally and Jan. 22 for the Fun Run. We will provide more information closer to those dates.

Language Arts- Our reading story for next week is "Wolf". We will focus on sequencing. We will also discuss nouns, verbs, subjects and predicates. The reading test will not be until the following week.

Social Studies-The students will present their Region projects. They are due on Monday. Please remind your child to practice presenting at home.

A Look Ahead...

Measuring Capacity
We decomposed a Liter of water into 10 parts today so the students understand that there are 1,000 mL in 1 Liter. They did a great job of using the LIFESKILL of Cooperation with their Learning Club to complete the task. Thanks for donating the empty 2 Liters for this lesson!

 Math- We continue to focus on using mL and L to find capacity. We will start rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. The students will have a quiz on mL/L and time on Wednesday. Math Newsletter 1

What's on the Agenda for Next Week?

I enjoyed meeting with everyone for Parent Teacher Conferences this week and last. Thank you for taking the time to meet with me and including your child in our conference together. 
I'm in need of five 2 Liter Bottles for math next week. If you have any empty, clean ones at home, please send them my way! Thanks! 

Math- We started time this week. The students will practice telling time and finding elapsed time. We will also start discussing metric units of capacity. (mL and L) The students will have a quiz over time on Thursday.  Math Newsletter1  Math Newsletter 2

Language Arts- We will work on writing a personal narrative next week. The students received their spelling words on Wednesday. Their test will be on Tuesday, October 6th. They can practice at Spelling City

Science- We will focus on plant and animal adaptations in the Temperate Forest and Arctic Tundra this week. The students will complete a mini research activity in class on an animal from one of the habitats we have studied in class.

Social Studies- We will continue to discuss the 6 Regions in SC. The students will have a quiz over the Blue Ridge, Piedmont and Sandhills regions on Wednesday.

What's on the Agenda for Next Week?

Book Fair started today!! We will visit it as a class on Monday afternoon so the students can purchase books and make a wish list. They will also have an opportunity to go by themselves if they have money next week.

Interims- It is hard to believe we are already half way through the first nine weeks of third grade. If you would like to see your child's average in each subject, please log on to Parent Portal. 

Math- We will wrap up our first topic in math on multiplication and division with a test on Wednesday. We will start learning about time. Don't worry...we will revisit multiplication and division again! Math Newsletter

*I'm going to start Fast Facts with the class. These are timed multiplication "tests" (not graded) they will take starting with their 2's and ending with their 12's. The goal is for them to master their facts before 4th grade. Your child can practice with flash cards or games online. Here are just a few...

Language Arts- We will be reading "Earth Smart" a nonfiction piece of literature. We will focus on text features found in nonfiction. We will also review main idea and how to write a detailed answer using evidence from passages. The students will have a test on "Earth Smart" on Friday.

Science- We are focusing on the plant and animal adaptations in Rain Forests, Temperate Forests and the Arctic Tundra.

Social Studies- We are learning about the human and physical features in the six regions of South Carolina. Look for information on a region project to come home this week or next.

WHAT'S MY SC SYMBOL?


In this photo the class is finishing a class activity on South Carolina symbols. This activity is a headband game. Each person would guess the South Carolina symbol on their headband. Their partner would give them a hint on what the South Carolina symbol is. I thought it was a great game!

A Look At Next Week...

The students did great with MAP testing this week. I will share their results with you at your child's conference. If you haven't signed up for a conference yet, please look at the post earlier in the week. 

The first collection of Box Tops will be Friday, September 18th. Please look for an email with a collection sheet and a flyer about what you can send in with your child to help earn money for our school. 

Math- We will continue working with division and multiplication and working on two-step word problems. We will have a test over this first module on Tuesday, September 22nd.  Math Newsletter

Language Arts- We continue looking at the story "Amazing Grace". We are focusing on character traits, types of sentences and cause and effect. The students will have a test on "Amazing Grace" on Thursday

Science- We will wrap up our discussion on Deserts and Grasslands with a test on Wednesday. We will focus on the Rain Forest.

Social Studies- The students will have a test on South Carolina Symbols on Tuesday. We will also start discussing the physical and human features of the six regions in South Carolina.

Disability Sensitivity Awareness

The students took part in several activities today that allowed them to experience the day-to-day obstacles faced by the disabled population. Make sure you ask them about their experiences.
