Week After Break

I hope everyone has a wonderful Spring Break! Safe travels if you are leaving Columbia! It sounds like everyone has some exciting plans. I did not send home Friday Folders because I didn't have any grades, but there is a flyer for Gator Fest in your child's binder.  

Leaning Tower of Feetza
The students worked in groups to build the tallest tower with their shoes. They did a great job of working together and using Habit 6 (Synergize). 




Curriculum
Math- We continue working with Fractions. The students will have a quiz on Wednesday. 

Language Arts- We will focus on summarizing texts with nonfiction passages. We will read   from our reading books. We are also start writing some Opinion pieces. 


Science-We continue discussing slow and fast changes to the Earth. 

Social Studies- We will continue discussing Antebellum Times in South Carolina.

Week Before Spring Break

Fireflies Field Trip
Please make sure you send back your child's permission slip for the Fireflies game by Thursday, if you will allow him/her to attend!! 

Ruth Bader Ginsburg
March is Women's History Month so each class presented information about a famous woman. Our class discussed Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Delaney and Samantha did a great job of presenting information about her on the morning show. 


Curriculum
Math- We continue working with Fractions. 

Language Arts- We will focus on summarizing texts. 


Science-We continue discussing slow changes to the Earth (weathering, erosion and deposition) and will be discussing fast changes as well. 

Social Studies- We will continue discussing Antebellum Times in South Carolina.

Skype Session

The students enjoyed our Skype session with author Suzanne Selfors today. I know they are excited to read book two of Wedgie and Gizmo and even book three when it is released.

Next Week

Fireflies Reading
The log for the Fireflies is due on Friday, March 23rd. Great way to earn a free ticket and food to one of the games!! 

State Museum Field Study
Your child has a permission slip for our field study in his/her Friday folder. Please fill out and return before Spring Break. Thanks! 

MAP (IMPORTANT)
The students will take MAP Reading and MAP Math next week. Reading is Tuesday morning and Math is on Thursday morning. Please make sure your child gets a restful night sleep, eats a good breakfast and is on time to school. We have been reviewing for quite a while so I'm sure the class will do great!! Please reiterate to your child at home about taking their time and doing their personal best! 

Cookie Weathering and Erosion
We started learning about weathering and erosion with a fun activity. The students weathered and eroded their cookie (rock) with wind (blowing in a straw), plants and animals (using a toothpick) and water (water dropper). They also recorded their observations after each step. 





Curriculum
Math- We continue working with Fractions. The students will take MAP Math on Thursday.


Language Arts-  We will take MAP Reading on Tuesday. We will also focus on summarizing texts. We will Skype with author Suzanne Selfors on Wednesday morning. The students have come up with some great questions to ask her. The students will take MAP Reading on Tuesday.


Science-We will move into slow changes to the Earth (weathering, erosion and deposition) 

Social Studies- We will start discussing Antebellum Times in South Carolina.

Magnificent Monarch Migration

We took a virtual field trip today and learned about the migration of the Monarch Butterflies to Mexico. It was very informative. They are an amazing species! Hopefully your child can fill you in on some of the facts they learned today about the Monarch Butterflies.

Next Week

MAP Testing
The students will take math and reading MAP on Tuesday, March 20th and Thursday, March 22nd. It is important that your child is in attendance those days so he/she can take it with the rest of the class. Also, please make sure he/she is on time to school. Please let me know if you have any questions. 

Book Order Reminder
If your child would like to order a book by Suzanne Selfors the orders are due Monday. We will Skype with her on March 21st. 

Curriculum

Language Arts-  We will focus on analyzing texts and summarizing. 

Science-We will move into slow changes to the Earth (weathering, erosion and deposition) We will also be participating in a Virtual Field Study on Magnificent Monarachs. It will take place in Mexico and will explore the migration of the Monarch Butterflies. 

Social Studies- We will start discussing Antebellum Times in South Carolina. 

*We will also continue reviewing some for MAP Reading and Math which we will take in late March.

A Look Ahead

We said goodbye to Carson today. He is moving to Germany. Our class will really miss him!! Good luck on your new adventure! 



Curriculum
Math- We are moving into Module 5, Fractions. 

Language Arts-  We continue to focus on Cause and Effect. The students will have a test over Amazing Grace on Thursday.

Science-We will move into slow changes to the Earth (weathering, erosion and deposition) 

Social Studies- We continue with our unit on Government (State and National). We will have a quiz over government on Friday. 

*We will also start reviewing some for MAP Reading and Math which we will take in late March.
