Mystery Number

Our Mystery Number definitely challenged us today!! The class come up with lots of good questions using math vocabulary and we would have guessed their number correctly, but one of their students answered one of our questions wrong so we had every digit right except the hundreds place!

Pet Rocks

I love all the pet rocks!! Very creative! We did a Gallery Walk today so the students could look at all the "art work". I will send pictures of the other pet rocks soon!!

Survival Kits
For LCEU’s 2nd Service Learning project, we are making Police Officer Survival Kits.  Every day, these men and women put their lives on the line to protect us.  Let’s show them some gratitude! 
3rd graders are asked to bring in Pay Day candy bars (fun size) and Hershey Kisses. 
We will be collecting candy through February 9th. 


Curriculum
Math- We continue in Module 4 on Multiplication and Area. We will also do our first Mystery Number Hangout with a class from another state. We will be a number between 1-1,000 and they will be a number. We have to ask yes/no math questions to determine what number they are and vice versa. Let's hope we do not have any weather issues that will postpone this Hangout! 

Language Arts- We will continue discussing how to find the Main Idea in passages/stories. We continue writing informative pieces. 

Science-We continue studying Rocks and Minerals. Your child will have a test on Thursday. Your child's pet rock is due on  Tuesday, January 30th.  Please remind them to turn in the biography sheet as well as their rock. 

Social Studies- We continue discussing the American Revolution.

The students did a great job questioning the other class during our Mystery Hangout! They were 4th graders and we figured out they were located in Kansas right before they guessed we were in SC.

A Look Ahead

The Great Kindness Challenge
I sent home a flyer explaining what this challenge entails. The students will receive a checklist of challenges he/she can do next week to show kindness. I will have them leave it in the front of their binder so you can look at it with them and help them perform some of the acts at home. They can also perform some at school. 

Class Pictures
There is a order form for class pictures in your child's Friday folder. Class pictures are Wednesday so if you would like to order one the money is due on the 24th. 

Read with the Gamecocks
Don't forget to encourage your child to keep writing down the books and pages he/she is reading. The reading log is due on Friday. 

Curriculum
Math- We continue in Module 4 on Multiplication and Area. The students will have a quiz over lessons 1-4 on Wednesday.

Language Arts- We will start discussing how to find the Main Idea in passages/stories. We will continue with our mentor sentence from the book My Brother Martin and it will focus on verbs. The students will have a quiz over this on Thursday. We continue writing informative pieces. 

Science-We continue studying Rocks and Minerals. Your child was assigned a fun pet rock project today. Make sure they tell you all about it!! It will be due on Tuesday, January 30th. 

Social Studies- We continue discussing the American Revolution.

Igneous Rocks

The students enjoyed forming an Igneous Rock today!! They used ice cream and Magic Shell chocolate. Hopefully they can tell you how an Igneous Rock forms since we did this fun hands on activity!

A Look At Next Week...


Read with the Gamecocks
The Read with the Gamecocks program begins on Monday. Students start counting pages read on Monday, January 15th through Friday, January 26th. 

Each student who participates receives 2 tickets (one adult and one student) to the following 2 games:

Women's Basketball - Sunday, February 18th @ 3 pm
Men's Basketball - Saturday, February 10th @ noon

* I gave the students there log today. It should be in the front of their binder or behind reading. 

Father Daughter Dance
Please see your daughter's Friday Folder for a flyer about the dance. It is at lower campus this year for all girls at lower or upper. It is on February 2nd from 5:30-8:00 pm.

Rocks and Minerals

The students classified their rocks and minerals (smooth/rough/both, dull/shiny etc.). They also tried to scratch different rocks to see which ones were harder and checked their streak.

A Look at Next Week

Curriculum
Math- We are continuing Part 2 of our Time Unit. We did Part 1 the first nine weeks. We will review telling time and focus on elapsed time. The students will have a classwork grade to wrap up Part 2 of Time and we will do more with elapsed time in the 3rd nine weeks. We will also move into Module 4 on Area and Multiplication. 

Language Arts- We continue working with the story, Castle on Viola Street. We continue focusing on finding the theme in texts. We continue writing nonfiction writing pieces. The students will have a test over their story on Thursday.

Science- We will start our unit on Rocks and Minerals. The students will need their rocks and minerals from Diamond Dell on Tuesday. 

Social Studies- We continue discussing the Revolutionary War. The students will have a quiz on the causes of the Revolutionary War on Friday

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!!! The students worked on making some New Year's goals. They tied in nicely to the book Wonder.  The students will reflect on their goals throughout the rest of the year to see how they are doing. If you made any resolutions, I hope you are able to achieve them too!
