Busy Week

A Look Ahead

Fraction Action

Fractional Autobiography Gallery Walk
The students enjoyed reading and looking at their peers' fractional autobiographies. 



Chalk Talk
The students wrote down facts they knew about fast changes to the Earth's surface in science, made connections to what other students knew and asked questions by using "chalk" (or in our case colored pencils). They "talked" with their "chalk" instead of verbalizing their thoughts. 


Read with the Gamecocks

The students are coming home today with a Read with the Gamecocks reading log. It starts on Monday and is due on March 10th. I have challenged the class to have all students turn it in because I know they are reading. 

Math- We will continue working with fractions in Module 6 and should wrap up be the end of the week with a test the following Tuesday or Wednesday.

Language Arts- The students will put the finishing touches on their Autobiographies. We will continue reading in Revolutionary War on Wednesday. The students will have a test over chapters 6-10 on Friday. We will also look at different types of figurative language. (personification, alliteration, metaphors etc.) 

Science- We will continue to look at slow and fast changes to the Earth's surface. We will also discuss how humans cause change to the Earth. 

Social Studies- We continue discussing Government.

Next Week

Math-
We continue to focus on Fractions in Module 5. We will continue to focus on placing fractions on a number line and looking at fractions greater than a whole. The students will have a quiz on Wednesday. The students' Fractional Autobiographies are due on Tuesday. I look forward to reading them and learning more about my class. 


Language Arts-We will finish up writing out autobiographies this week. The students will have a quiz over Chapters 1-5 in Revolutionary War on Wednesday on Wednesday (easy to remember).The quiz is open book. 

Science- We continue to discuss slow and fast changes to the Earth. 

Social Studies- We will start out unit on Government.

World Read Aloud Day

Did you know today was World Read Aloud Day? Several students from our class read parts of the book Mother Bruce to a 1st/2nd grade class at Round Top Elementary this morning.

Cookie Weathering and Erosion

We kicked off Slow Changes to the Earth today with a little hands on activity involving a cookie. Of course, they loved it because it involved food! Make sure you ask your child what can cause weathering and erosion. They should know a little bit after today's lesson.

Next Week

Valentine's Day
The students will have an opportunity to pass out Valentines on Tuesday. We will not be making boxes or bags to collect them in, but I will give the students a Ziploc bag to carry them home. If they want to bring something in that they made at home that is fine. 

Gullah Speaker
The students enjoyed listening to our Gullah speaker, Gervonder Brown (Island Gal), today. She discussed the Gullah culture, told the students Gullah stories and taught them some words in Gullah and their meanings.

She taught them how to say mind your manners in Gullah.

She showed them a sweet grass basket. 
Math Fun
The students used Legos one day this week while discussing fractions. 



Math- We will continue with Fractions in Module 5. Your child was assigned a Fractional Autobiography project which is due Tuesday, February 21st. 

Language Arts- The students continue writing their autobiography. We will also continue to read Revolutionary War on Wednesday. The students will have a quiz over chapters 1-5 sometime this week. I'm not sure of the day yet, but it will be open book. We are also continue discussing figurative language. (ex. similes, metaphors). The students will have a quiz on the mentor sentence we have been working on from the book My Brother Martin on Wednesday. 

Science- We will start discussing slow (weathering, erosion, deposition) and fast changes to the Earth (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods etc.)

Social Studies- We will wrap up our unit on the American Revolution with a test on Thursday. We will then move into Government.

Next Week

Steven Robinson job shadowed me today. He is at Dent Middle School in the TLC program and attended LCE in elementary school. The students enjoyed having him in class. Some asked if he could come back on Monday. 😊

The students used Play-dough today to model different land forms and water features. 
Rhelani created an island formed by a volcano with  waves in the ocean.  


Math- We continue learning about Fractions. 


Language Arts- The students will start writing their autobiographies. Your child's interview answers are due on Monday. We will also start reading Revolutionary War on Wednesday



Science- We will wrap up land forms. The students will not be formally assessed on land forms. They will be graded on completing a performance task.



Social Studies- We continue looking at the Revolutionary War in South Carolina. The plan is to wrap up by the end of the week with a test at the beginning of the following one.

Congratulations!

We had a lot to celebrate in class today!!! Marett and Joseph earned their Reading Counts t-shirts and Nathan S. passed all his fast facts through his 12's!!!!
